I was wondering though how much opening and closing a typical screw down crown can handle. Best way to avoid thread damage is to turn the crown counter clockwise while gently depressing it until you feel the tiny 'click' indicating the threads are lined up. Next: while gently depressing the crown turn it clockwise until it is snug.
I just bought an Air King last week from Singapore and when I came back to my country I had to adjust the time by rotating counter clockwise on the crown for 1 hour. It would be very easy on this watch to 'cross-thread' and damage the crown and/or retaining thread tube if not careful. The advice to press it in gently and back it up until it clicks, and then thread it in gently, is good advice and something that mechanical techs / engineers will do to prevent cross-threading.
you are right to say that unscrew and screw back crown in the long run as the threads on on both ends aka the watch end and crown can be worn out. that is why if you bring say a 15-20 year old watch to RSC, they will recommend you change crown and/or case to ensure water resistance.
The crown might be loose on the stem, turn it anti clockwise for a while and see if it comes off. If it does put a touch of green loctite on the thread in crown and wind it back on again in winding position not hand set, give it a good old wind.
